Above- original photo Left- in progress piece Below- finished piece I took this photo over the summer at the beach. The beach is important to me because my family usually goes there every year, and I love watching sunsets as the beach. I think my palm tree and the blended colors of the sunset were most successful. I might change what the land looks like and make it look more realistic and maybe spend some more time on the sunlight reflecting across the water. I chose watercolor for this piece because it allowed me to get the right sunset colors and blend them better than I could've done with acrylic. Above- original image Left- in progress piece Below- finished piece I choose to draw goggles(to represent swimming), microphone(I like to sing), ukulele(I enjoy playing ukulele), apple(I like fruit), Eno(I like camping and enos), cross necklace(represents my faith), and a piano book(I take piano lessons). I think that I did a successful job with the ukulele and creating the right colors. If I were to change something I would add more detail to the piano book because it makes part of the piece seem empty. Also, I think I should've added more detail to the Eno. I chose acrylic because it allowed me to get the vibrant colors and have clean edges on my objects. My mentors name is Taylor and her blog link is taylorwart.weebly.com. She wants to be a costume designer when she grows up, and has taken all visual art classes. She always pays attention to small details. Throughout the mentoring process, I want to get advice on how to improve my art skills.
I morphed a banana and a snail because I found a picture of a banana slug and thought it was a great idea, and wanted to change it in some way to make it my own. To create this piece I started out with a pencil sketch and added in color, value, and several layers with prisma colored pencils. I really like how vibrant and bright I could make the color on the banana, but wish I had made the banana snail larger and the log smaller. I might also change the log to make it look more realistic. Overall, I am happy with the outcome of my banana snail and hope you enjoy it! I chose the acrylic sphere as my most useful warmup because it helped me learn how to create dark and light values with paint other than watercolor. I have never been good at acrylic painting but this warmup definitely improved my painting skills.
All of the mediums have things that make them good and bad. The advantage of doing a pencil drawing is that you can erase it if you mess up. The disadvantage of doing a pencil drawing is that you can't always get in your darkest darks like you could with a pen drawing. The advantage of doing a pen drawing is that you can get very dark values but if you mess up you can't erase your mistake which is a disadvantage. And finally, charcoal which is good for shading and you can simply erase your mistakes into the background using your finger if you are drawing with vine charcoal. The disadvantage of using charcoal is that it's very messy and can stain your clothing.
